1st weekend of December

Well after the nightmare of Wednesday I was feeling pretty down, having broken an ankle I know how hard it is to get about, I was ready to pack it in but some words from one or two people I decided to take to the hills on my own . Saturday morning I loaded my rucksack and set off from my front door Helen tagged on for the ascent of Warton crag leaving her at Leighton Hall Me and Bob(aka Beau)dropped down to cross to the Moss, the Gentry milling around everywhere with silly hats and plus 4's preparing to shoot, not much chat going on when you are on your own. I made my way through Holgate's climbed Arnside Knot then looped back around the old Quarry back through Yealand before dropping back into Warton, workout done 15 miles 4000ft ascent 5.5mph ave Speed and back home by Lunch time Bg back on.

With my workout done on Saturday I thought an easy jog out on Sunday would be good. Relaxing on the Sofa Saturday night I get a Txt " Any run planned for tomorrow" .Nothing in mind But happy to join You If you Like was my reply "great will pick you up at 8am never done Fairfeild Horse shoe ". A little more then I had in mind but I do love the Lakeland Fells and the BG is only 27 weeks away.

So up early rucksack reloaded and a belly full of baked beans. Andrew arrived on time we picked up Stuart on the way driving up the weather was clear should be ok we said possible shower and a bit windy on the summit, (or that could be the baked beans)we thought. Turning off the car engine seems to trigger something in them clouds, we had barely laced up our shoes when the rain started. Undeterred off we went only half way up Nab Scar the rain stopped Stuart storming ahead "not run since Wednesday" he shouted. The chat was good with numerous topic's from great fell runners to what the kids get up to, before too long we arrived at the summit of Fairfield with snow on the ground, no view to admire and an increasing wind we quickly departed.

The normal easy to follow path was covered in snow, we should thank everyone who puts a stone on the Cairn's they make life so much easier when conditions are hard. The pace had slowed as we stumbled over the snow and ice covered rocks, then rain and darts arrived but we battled our way to the last summit of Dove Crag on as we crossed the old wall to start the long easy descent the rain eased, all of us very wet and cold it was time for a comfort break, change of gloves, drink and bite to eat. Andrew and I were chatting as we watched Stuart struggle to tie his laces Andrew taking over as Stuart complained of an old rugby injury making it impossible to tie them with cold hands. Laces done we continued our descent the ground sodden catching out Andrew slipping and sliding his way down the fell "that's it these shoes are in the bin when I get home " the rain stopped to clouds lifted and the views were stunning yet again. Back at the car that damn key jinks struck again wet kit was off our nice dry warm clothes on and then the heavens opened again as we refuelled with flapjack and rice pudding.

A great morning out on the fells with some great company and back home for lunch time again, maybe these early start aren't that bad after all. 10miles 3500ft ascent and 4mph ave speed
