The Greater Fairfield Horseshoe

5 Dallam runners 2 dogs and 1 shopper.

I do like the 10am start, no rushing to get everything sorted in a morning and time for breakfast, time to shop for sweets.

Arrived at Rydal Church just before 9:45 and still plenty of parking, we sent our shopper - Adele on her way and off we set, bang straight into the climb, think we should find a different parking place next time, not long before the hat and gloves came off and we continued to the first summit of the day Nab Scar with its stunning views of Rydal Water and the fantastic colours of the autumn trees below, we reached Heron Pike, then it was a descent down Butter Crag, which turned out to be very aptly named, crossed the river and the start of the long climb to Great Rigg taking in Stone Arthur on the way, before long the clag arrived, good job its an easy path to follow this week.

On reaching Fairfield summit, we had snow on the ground no way near enough to build a snowman but the first snow of the year. A quick lunch break of Malt loaf and rice pudding and off to Hart Crag over some very wet and slippery rocks which had both me then Stuart take a tumble, Stuart most more concerned about ripping his new waterproof coat then breaking a leg, thankfully no damage to either. Leaving Hart Crag we came across a Raven sat on a rock with not a care in the world,I've never got so close (4ft) to such a large bird before.

Crossing the old wall at Dove Crag we started the long descent to Low Sweden Bridge the clag soon lifted giving us some more fantastic views over Ambleside and Windermere. With many walkers climbing to Fairfield, the paths have become very muddy and wet but this just adds to the thrill of the fast descent. Stopping frequently on our descent to admire the views which had evaded us for most of the day, would add to our overall time but well worth it in my eyes.

Yet another great day out on the fells, GPS went down for a short time so our distance, ascent and speed will be on the low side this is what it read 10.6m 4622ft ascent 2.8mph avg speed
