An Easy Weekend part 2

Sunday 31st Jan

Leg 5 Mary T with Martin B

The Mary Townley relay race consists of 5 Legs around the Peninne Bridleway, each leg is run by 2 runners from each team who must start and finish together.

The morning was a cold -5, not a mega early start for us we needed to be at the start of Leg 3 with Helen, Julie & Micky P by 10:30am.

I had a gentle stroll up the hill of Leg 3 when we arrived, then I watched a few of the leaders pass through before a gentle stroll back down to the start passing the time with some chat to the other Dallam team I watched patiently as first Micky P and Leechy ran off then around 15minutes later Helen and Julie started their race.

Time to move to the start of Leg 5 Martin jumping in the car with me, we dropped a few bags off for the Leg 3 teams before driving on. As we had plenty of time Tom Tom decided to take a slight detour, as he often does with new road lay outs, un-deterred we arrived and parked in a prime position ready for lunch whilst watching the numerous teams arrive and depart. Lunch for me was Country Veg soup with brown bread, some grapes and a slice of malt loaf I was well stuffed but I had plenty of time for lunch to settle. We saw in Javro and Mike H so our team mates will be around 20 minutes behind........ time for that caffeine drink and some gentle warm ups, need to keep warm this starting point is very open no shelter at all. A few other teams members arrived to cheer in Janey and Ella and see us off.

The next 1:26:34 sec was to be a pretty good steady paced run over some long hilly ice covered ground. I tramped on cutting off the odd corner here and there and showing some lost ladies which to go, we passed a fallen runner surrounded by medic's, think he slipped on ice and had broken his ankle, pushing on we arrived at the big long drag so it was head down time and then through the old slag heaps, Martin was struggling slightly so I fed him a super Gel with around 4 miles to go and that stinging final climb to the school . As we ran up the hill I was pushing Martin as much as I could and then we heard the cheering of the Dallam support , think we would have won the largest, loudest support team prize if there was one, thanks for hanging around.

A good day out its nice to be part of great little club like Dallam well done to everyone.

Totals 9.5m 1334ft ascent 6.6mph
